The academic records of all enrolled undergraduate students are reviewed at the end of each semester and summer term. The University reserves the right to dismiss any student whose cumulative grade point average (GPA) falls below 2.0. Any continued student whose cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 will be placed on academic probation. Second-semester first year students who have a GPA below 2.0 and who have been allowed to continue for the spring semester must enroll and attend Rebound, a non-credit bearing course which focuses on academic recovery in their spring semester.
A student on probation must achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 within the next term of enrollment at the University. If, during the probationary period, the 2.0 cumulative GPA is approached and their term GPA has improved, they will remain on academic probation. If their term GPA does not improve and their cumulative GPA is under a 2.0, that student may be dismissed or placed on strict academic probation for one semester. A student who has not reached the 2.0 GPA standard at the end of the strict probation period is subject to the dismissal policies of the University. (See section on academic dismissals.) Any student on probation may be required to carry a reduced course load. Probationary status is removed at the end of any grading period, provided the student has achieved a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
Registration Restrictions
Students on probation are limited to a maximum of 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters, with exceptions made only for courses that include a lab component. Students on probation are prohibited from registering for accelerated courses during the fall or spring semesters, and may not enroll in a May term course. Enrollment in online courses is restricted, except when the course is not available in any other modality and cannot be taken in a subsequent semester.
Students may take courses during the summer term if the course lasts 7 weeks or longer. However, it is advised to limit enrollment to no more than one course per term. These conditions apply solely during the period of academic probation. Failure to adhere to these restrictions may result in a manual course drop by your advisor or by the Office of Records and Registration. If these limits are exceeded and your term GPA does not improve, you may be subject to dismissal upon review of your academic progress by the academic dismissal committee.
